CHIMERAWORLD #3 UPDATE:

I've just read through the second batch of submissions for Chimeraworld #3 (misogynist, atheist, terrorist) and sent out rejection letters for some and editorial suggestions for others. There were a couple of right corkers from David L Tamarin and Anthony Armstrong.

Here are the acc/rej percentages so far.

44% of all submissions so far have made it through to the next selection stage.
56% of all submissions so far were rejected, mostly on the grounds of being WAY OFF GUIDELINES - but since www.Ralan.com posted my note that too many stories were off guidelines the percentage of stories on guidelines has improved dramatically.

Quick recap: I'd say I have two thirds of the stories I need for a superb CW3 at this point - the deadline for submissions has been extended to end October 2005 just to give those who were a bit close to the wire more time to work on their subs.

OLDBOY KICKS ASS:

OLDBOY (a Korean film by Chanwook Park) is the new ICHI THE KILLER. It's the story of foul-mouthed bad-mannered bad-boy DAE SU who, one night after being released from the Police station in a drunken mess, is kidnapped and held captive for fifteen years. Yup, fifteen years. While in captivity, he ponders his pissed-away life, hardens himself up and swears revenge on his abductor. Little does he know that he's merely a pawn in a sick game of hypnotic control. Gruesome stuff that is comparable to the best of Takashi Miike.

MISS THIS STUNNING MOVIE AT YOUR PERIL.

THE BEST OF HIM+CHIM+HER:

I know I promised this hinted at this book for Q1 2006 but the joy of Chimericana Books is it's mine and I can do what I want, when I want, how I want.

Chim+Her and Chim+Him were two separate titles originally published through Cyber Pulp Press of Houston. They showed how much fun one can have in collaboration with another writer of either sex. Where there were three collabs with each of the writers in the original books, here I’ve chosen the very best collaborations from each book. Collaborations with Destiny West, Queenie Tirone, Dawn Andrews, Brutal Dreamer, Charlee Jacob, Amy Grech, Christina Sng, Alex Severin, Simon Logan, Mark McLaughlin, Vincent Sakowski, Greg Wharton, John Edward Lawson, D.F. Lewis and M.F. Korn.

PATRICIA HIGHSMITH FILMS:

Though I’ve never read any of her books, I’ve enjoyed a couple of Patricia Highsmith’s movie adaptations; namely the Ripley films (The Talented Mr Ripley and Ripley’s Game). I was thinking why aren’t more Highsmith novels adapted for the screen? Then I saw a French film called HARRY, HE'S HERE TO HELP ('With friends like Harry' was the U.S. title).

Harry Ballestero meets his old school chum Michel after twenty years and their relationship begins to grow again amid Michel’s collapsing marriage. It all starts amicably. There are no suspicions on either side. Then Harry buys Michel's family a new 4x4 to replace their dilapidated charabang.

Slowly but surely, Harry starts to insinuate himself into their lives and you KNOW it’s not gonna end well. Sufficient twists and turns in the plot keep your eyes glued to the screen.

CHIMERAWORLD #3 GUIDELINES:

GUIDELINE ALERT:

The reading period for Chimeraworld #3 has begun. The first batch of stories has been assessed and rejections sent out - the main reason for rejection is WAY OFF GUIDELINES.

As there was a grand guignol theme for CW1.
As there was a morbid hell-trip theme for CW2.
So there is a theme for CW3 - misogynist, atheist, terrorist. Please read the detailed theme guidelines before sending in further submissions .

Chimeraworld #3 Guidelines.

Get busy, Chimeraworlders, knock my editorial socks off this year!

MY MOST... MAINSTREAM ...STORY YET:

According to Rich Moore (fiction editor for Red Scream magazine in New York) my latest story TWELVE O'CLOCK SHADOW in the Australian printed magazine DARK ANIMUS #8 is my most... mainstream ...piece to date.

He should know, he's been kind enough to run a 5-page launch-issue feature and take a number of my less-mainstream-shock-horror-n-sleaze pieces for future editions of his magazine. Incidentally, I still refuse to deliver the minimum artistic content in my stories. They MUST be as artistic as possible, as personal as possible. Screw your imagined audience; maybe it isn't even born yet. Write from the heart, not the pocket.

When I sat down to write this story, I had in my mind the shadow of that soldier burned into the marble steps outside the then Hiroshima Prefectural Building for Promotion of Industry, August 6 1945, sixty years before.

Anyway, here's a small segment from TWELVE O'CLOCK SHADOW, make up your own mind:

Remember, up until now nobody has asked me what I’m doing here typing into this military-looking old laptop. It’s not the latest model. It’s not flashy or slim looking. It’s not made of chrome, no holographic pattern lives upon its surface. In fact, it’s quite bulky, matt-black and quite cubic.

A rumble of footsteps, a hiss of clothing, a spark of heals, anonymous pedestrians flaring to cinder in my mind. The man leaves, closes his murder-mystery book, gets up onto his feet and leaves. It’s not yet twelve o’clock. He’s one of the lucky ones who might be reading the news tonight, know he escaped with his life. Makes you think how close you come to death with every waking second. Three seats all for me. Two minutes to twelve.

Why am I doing it? Don’t I love life anymore? Do I have a belief system that will support my actions? A glance at the clock. Getting busy now, a blur of skin and sandal passes my by. I no longer want to look at their faces, these victims. I can hear their foreign tongues, no turning off the hearing. I can hear mummies consoling babies that, “it will be okay”. No it won’t. You’re wrong, little mother. Sing while you can my children. Shriek and dance and make merry.

THE NO-MATTER UNIVERSE:

...the more I think about it, the more obvious it is becoming. Random universal ramblings continue thus:

You DO NOT need matter to make a universe, to form galactic structures, to form stars with 'solar' systems, to form atoms. I think SCIENCE (big S for side-lined) is looking in completely the wrong place for its inspiration.

The structure of the universe is already there. It was probably already there BEFORE the first instance of matter-like overflow of its structure; it is the reason why the structures are able to FORM things like galaxies, stars, atoms... the universal direction is set in stone (weak metaphor but...) from the global to the local. You look at the miniscule, as a scientific community, and work outwards to the stars, you're totally mis-interpreting any possible understanding of what this great singularity is.

There is one major driving force in the universe - gravity.

You can imagine the entire universe pulling together (or falling in) in every conceivable place. Maybe this is what BIG BANG means... the instance the first of the 'atoms' in this extra-dimensional force system actually overloaded and sent an electro-magnetic wave through the existent structure, feeding other matter potentials as it went.

Maybe, before matter, there was no space (even though there'd be structure as dictated by the gravity of the universe). The space came about as a result of this excess stress released as matter. Sure, this matter has form and forces but ONLY as a result of its origin, the same way shrapnel has form and forces ONLY as the bomb goes off.

It's becoming more and more obvious (or I convincing myself more and more) that with a gravity only system you can't have light, or other em radiation, as you can't have space - without matter.

Light and other em radiations come from the effect of 'matter' generated at the focal points of this stress structure that sucks the universe together. But it is filling in. The universe ONLY fills in. That's its prime function, to return to singularity, or at least matterlessness. Pure structure.

But RED SHIFT... I don't know. As every point in space is red-shifting, it makes no sense to assume that red-shift = planets moving away. I suspect that red shift will eventually be proven to indicate em radiation's propagation through space. A tiredness factor based on age of 'light'. Now there's another thousand hours of food for thought.

WHITE NINJA, ENVIRONMENT SOUL FISHES:

Solely because the gregarious folk behind WHITE NINJA offer me a staggering $13,130,006.03 for every new comic update mentioned, here's three new ones from the master of espionage - now I can retire to the country to stroke lemurs all day and bask in the radioactive joy of the Lord Photon.

chucklenote: that last one (fishes) was so funny, I actually cried blood, snot, bile AND kidney stones.

SZMONHFU BANNED BY OXFAM:

Met my old buddy Neal who does voluntary work for Oxfam here in Oxford. He stops me in the street the other day and goes, "Guess what just came through our shop?"
I go, "Dunno."
He goes, "Szmonhfu."
I go, "My book?"
He goes, "We banned it. Content too strong. Caused quite a heated argument in the shop."
I go, "Nice one, see ya!"

Classic.
